Sidney Taren

 Sidney Taren 94, passed away on September 4, 2011. Sid was born in Scranton, PA, met his wife, Bette in St. Louis, MO while serving as a staff sergeant in the US Army, before being deployed to Europe for WWII. As a businessman he lived in Omaha, NE and owned Robinson Iron and Metal. Moving to Tucson in 1971 when he was employed as general manager of National Metals. Sid was always involved with organizations that served the community. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners in Omaha and an active Rotarian in Tucson, and served as President of the Saguaro Rotary Club.
He was a competitive runner and an Arizona State Senior Olympic Champion at the 1 mile and 5 km distances. He continued running and winning races against younger age groups into his 80s. He had a love for knowledge and took classes after his retirement from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arizona into his 90s. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Rae "Bette" and brother, Walter Taren. He is survived by his brothers, Larry and Arnold Taren and sister, Mimi Ross; his children, Robert (Anita), Julie and Doug (Myra); grandchildren, Sanet and Crystal; great-grandson, Eli along with step-grandchildren, Katie, Michael (Jessie) and his great-stepdaughter, Lucy. A Memorial Service will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road, Tucson, AZ 85716 on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Saguaro Rotary Foundation (c/o College Place), 1601 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85705 to support their education programs.
