Our speaker this week was Betty Stauffer, Executive Director of the Literacy Volunteers of Tucson. She presented the histry of literacy organizations in Tucson and explained her organization's mission. LVT trains volunteers to tutor adults in reading and sometimes math. The students are sometimes English a a Second Language (ESL) students, but also adults who just want to improve their literacy skills. They offer conversation groups for practice and most of their instruction is done in classes, but sometimes one on one, if necessary. In order to maintain flexibility, LVT dropped state funding and relies solely on private donations and volunteers. Literacy Volunteers of Tucson can be found at www.lovetoread.org
